Humein Badhna Hai

PCI India has partnered with the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) to provide holistic counselling to students at 106 girls residential schools in 10 districts across the 5 divisions of Jharkhand. The intervention is expected to benefit more than 50,750 girl students of 6th-12th grades at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) and Jharkhand Balika Awasiya Vidyalaya (JBAV) who are offered counselling on Educational Pathways, Career Guidance, Life Skills & Safe Passage to Adulthood to set them on the pathway of economic independence and grow up into productive human resources.

The program is being implemented in 10 districts including: Ranchi, Latehar, Dhanbad, Godda, Gumla, Palamu, East Singhbhum, Bokaro, Jamtara, and Saraikela Kharsawan.

Humein Badhna Hai engages a girl student from grades 6th-12th through modular sessions, group counselling sessions, and individual counselling in three cohorts that are expected to transform her into productive human resource with developed agency and clearly set goals.

The holistic counselling package has been graded into three cohorts of students, with a focus on:

  • Cohort 1 (6th-8th Grade) – Career exploration, educational pathways & planning.
  • Cohort 2 (9th-10th Grade) – Goal setting & addressing possible challenges along the way.
  • Cohort 3 (11th-12th Grade) – Pathways to achieve goals relevant schemes and scholarships.

To facilitate the counselling sessions, teachers are selected from each school who are capacitated as counsellors on counselling package compendium, skills & modules. These trained teachers then conduct modular sessions and group counselling sessions in their respective schools at the three cohorts.

Some of the topics for graded modular sessions include:

  • Goal setting
  • Life skills (personal problem-solving skills)
  • Gender and social norms
  • Barriers and enablers
  • Pathways to achieve goals
  • Sexual and reproductive health rights
  • Child rights and legal awareness
